Sunshine Coast Council is undertaking public consultation of the mass transit project until 22 June 2021. Written submissions can be made during this timeframe.
We are supportive of the mass transit project, as the population of the Sunshine Coast is projected to increase by approximately 200,000 people over the next 20 years. Over 60% of this growth is required to be accommodated within existing urban areas by the SEQ Regional Plan, and it’s coming whether Council plans for it or not.
An effective public transport system is an essential component for the sustainability of the region. We believe that the mass transit project provides an opportunity to establish high amenity activity centres at key nodal points along the mass transit corridor route.
New technologies are enabling change at a rapid rate. In evaluating the different mass transit modes, we believe that significant weight should be given to the ability of each option to adapt to future advancements in technology. That is, building fixed infrastructure in and above the ground (e.g. tracks or overhead power) may not be the best long-term or the most sustainable solution for the community.
We encourage the development industry to review the draft options analysis and complete the Sunshine Coast Mass Transit Survey. Taking the time to do this will ensure Council is provided with a greater range of views on the mass transit options and not just those of vocal minorities.
